Tom Rainey Trio

Ingrid Laubrock, tenor saxophone
Mary Halvorson, el. guitar
Tom Rainey , drums

Ars Nova Workshop presents the Philadelphia debut of the Tom Rainey Trio featuring drummer Tom Rainey, guitarist Mary Halvorson and saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock.  The trio recently released their excellent debut album, PoolSchool (Clean Feed; 2010), which marks Rainey’s debut as a group leader.

California-born drummer Tom Rainey got his start playing drums in a top 40 cover band that performed hits by Santana, Steely Dan, and Chicago.  He soon after began studying jazz drumming, and cites Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, and Miles Davis as his earliest influences.  He studied music in Boston at the Berklee College of Music, eventually relocated to New York City in 1979, and has since appeared on over 75 recordings.  He has performed and/or recorded with Herb Robertson, Bill Frisell, Craig Taborn, Tim Berne (Paraphrase, Hard Cell, Science Friction), Okkyung Lee, Angelica Sanchez, Mark Helias, Tony Malaby, Nels Cline, and Marc Ducret.  Tom Rainey's first recording as a group leader, Pool School by the Tom Rainey Trio with Mary Halvorson and Ingrid Laubrock, was released in mid-2010 by Clean Feed.  Working in the past with Evan Parker, Jessica Pavone, Anthony Braxton, Taylor Ho Bynum, Todd Sickafoose, Jenny Scheinmann, and Trevor Dunn, to name only a few, these two diverse and exceptional musicians contribute amazing depth and vibrancy to Rainey’s challenging compositions, forming one of the most exciting new trios exploring the limits of improvisation and composition.
