Composing Improvisation (with Matthew Shipp and Nate Wooley)

Matthew Shipp, piano
Nate Wooley, trumpet

ACF Philadelphia, in collaboration with Ars Nova Workshop, is excited to present a set of exploratory events focusing on the convergence of notated and improvised music. Our aim is to highlight some of the history and methodology of contemporary improvised music and show how composers who create music via free improvisation have been influenced by composers who create with notation.

Presentations and workshops will include both freely improvised and notated compositions. ACF Philadelphia invites all musicians, composers, and audience members in Philadelphia to attend and participate in the performances and workshops, particularly the core ACF membership. All attendees will be asked to give feedback about the performance and offer their thoughts on future performances involving the co-presentation of music created with free improvisation and notation.

Matthew Shipp (piano) and Nate Wooley (trumpet) have chosen specific notated pieces to be presented on this concert. They will briefly discuss how the notated piece they chose for the program has influenced their own improvised music. Shipp and Wooley will improvise separately and then together as a duo.
