Allison Miller, drums

Please join Ars Nova Workshop for the record release celebration of Allison Miller's latest recording, BOOM TIC BOOM (Foxhaven Records).

NYC-based drummer Allison Miller defies all boundaries bringing her individual sound to diverse types of music while preserving their stylistic authenticity. Allison goes from playing with legendary songwriting vocalists Ani DiFranco, Brandi Carlile and Natalie Merchant, to performing with Marty Ehrlich, legendary organist Doctor Lonnie Smith, Erik Friedlander and Steven Bernstein.

The Philadelphia debut of Miller's quartet features a stellar all-star unit. Pianist Myra Melford is a sonic explorer whose career has been defined by a restless curiosity and openness to collaborative creativity. Since her debut album in 1990 she has appeared on more than 30 recordings. She's collaborated with Leroy Jenkins, Joseph Jarman, Henry Threadgill and Butch Morris, among many others. Her work has established her as a distinctive voice with what Duke Ellington scholar Reuben Jackson called “a commitment to refreshing, often surprising uses of melody, harmony and ensemble playing.” Violinist Jenny Scheinman has been Downbeat Magazine's #1 Rising Star Violinist for the last five years. She has garnered numerous high-profile arranging credits with artists such as Lucinda Williams, Bono, Lou Reed and Sean Lennon, and has toured and recorded with Bill Frisell, Norah Jones, Madeleine Peyroux, Nels Cline, Vinicius Cantuaria and Mark Ribot. A Bay Area native, Todd Sickafoose studied bass with Charlie Haden and composition with Mel Powell. Since, he's been recording and performing with numerous innovators including Ani DiFranco, Andrew Bird, Don Byron, Trey Anastasio, Nels Cline, Ron Miles, Tin Hat Trio, Stanton Moore, Bobby Previte, Scott Amendola and Carla Bozulich. The consistency of his personal voice within wildly diverse collaborations prompted the LA Weekly in 2004 to call Todd "one of the most comprehensive musical minds of this coast".
